Two routes to Taikoiwa

(i)Course through Kusu River Trail
The Kusu River trail is relatively easy to walk on. Walking along the gentle path, you will reach Shiratani Hut in about one hour. You can see a Yakusugi cedar tree called "7 Cedars" right after the hut.

(2)Wilderness Trail Course
It is a little difficult to walk because of the low elevation and many roots, but there is a very nice space there for a quiet walk along the mountain path☆.

From the entrance to Taikoiwa, it takes about 2 hours by the Kusu River course and about 3 hours by the primeval forest course.

		Shiratani Unsui Gorge entrance (600m elevation) to Shiratani Hut (850m elevation) ➡︎You can choose between the following two routes depending on your climbing history.
		Arrival at Moss Forest [5 minutes]. ➡︎ The path is a bit steep from here onward, so those who are not comfortable walking can fully enjoy the experience up to this point.
		Moss Forest ~.Tsuji󠄀Toge - Taikoiwa [1 to 1.5 hours]. The path is not ➡︎ maintained and can be difficult to walk on due to roots.

Two routes to Taikoiwa

Route 1: Shiratani Unsui Gorge Entrance (600m above sea level) - Tobitaki DropKusu River Trail〜Kuguri cedar - Shiratani hut (altitude: 850 m)
➡︎ Kusugawa trail is gentle and relatively easy to walk. From Shiratani Hut, you can see Yakusugi cedars called "seven cedars. 1 hr.

Route 2: Shiratani Unsui Gorge Entrance (600m above sea level) - Tobitaki Dropvirgin forest road〜Kuguri cedar - Shiratani hut (altitude: 850 m)

Top: T-shirts made of synthetic fiber or wool that are not sticky when wet, long-sleeved or short-sleeved are recommended. Please also bring a fleece, down jacket, or other warm clothing except during the summer season.

The mossy forest and the spectacular view from Taikoiwa. Since we had the entire day to ourselves, we were able to enjoy it at our own pace, which was very satisfying.

We only had about 5-6 hours to spend in Yakushima, but we were able to go to the moss forest, which was our goal, and we were able to enjoy our first time in Yakushima thanks to the wonderful guide who took pictures at each point and explained the plants to us. I was worried about climbing the mountain because of my lack of physical strength, but with the experienced support of our veteran guide, we were able to reach the "moss forest" without any problems. My wife was able to safely reach Taikoiwa, and although it was foggy when we arrived at Taikoiwa, as luck would have it, the fog lifted for a moment and we were able to enjoy the spectacular view. I joined the tour with my mother in her 80s and two daughters. I was worried about whether we would be able to make it to Taikoiwa because of the Jomon cedar tour the day before, but thanks to our experienced guide, Mr. Gei, we made it to Taikoiwa without any problems.
