Shiratani Unsui Gorge - Jomon Cedars - Arakawa Trailhead Trekking TourYakushima Island, which came into the limelight when it was registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, has been recognized by various Japanese organizations as a "first-class" place for its rich natural environment.

Shiratani Unsui Gorge (Shiratani Unsui Gorge)
At Shiratani-unsui Gorge, visitors can enjoy a slow walk through beautiful mountain streams and deep green forests covered with hundreds of types of moss.
You may also encounter some of the animals that inhabit Yakushima.
The Mononoke Forest in Shiratani Unsui Gorge was the setting for the Ghibli movie. The moss-covered rocks and trees are very mysterious.
Jomon cedar (Cryptomeria japonica)
It is considered the oldest giant tree on Yakushima and is believed to be 2170~7200 years old.
Today it is better known as Jomon Cedar, but when it was first discovered it was called Oiwa Cedar.
There are several theories as to why it changed from Oiwa cedar to Jomon cedar, with some saying that it resembles the shape of Jomon pottery and others that it has existed since the Jomon period.

Reference of clothing
Trekking pants made of stretch or quick-drying material. Jeans and cotton pants are not acceptable)

*Please be well equipped for climbing Jomon Cedars in December and March, as snow can accumulate.

Since I am a Ghibli fan, this course was perfect for me, as I could also visit the Mononoke Forest, and I liked that I could do both in one day. The Jomon cedars were divine and truly breathtaking, and I was also impressed by the mysterious green space of Shiratani Unsui Gorge. I am glad I was able to participate!

540代Month of posting: 2023/10I usually climb mountains, so I decided to try the Jomon Cedars of Yakushima, so I joined this trekking tour from Shiratani Unsui Gorge to the Jomon Cedars. The beautiful mountain streams and moss in Shiratani-unsui Gorge were very magical, and the Jomon cedars were overwhelmingly powerful. Thanks to the detailed explanations given by our tour guide, we were able to learn a lot about the charms of Yakushima. Thank you very much.
