    Yakushima-Yayoi cedar

    What is Yayoi Cedar?

*As of September 2024, the trunk has been broken due to Typhoon No. 10. The Yakushima Forest Office and Yakushima Forest Ecosystem Conservation Center, etc. will consider the future handling of the tree.

Yayoi cedar is one of the Yakusugi trees, synonymous with Yakushima, and is said to be about 3,000 years old.

Located in Shiratani-unsui Gorge in the northern part of Yakushima, it takes about 20 minutes to visit from the entrance.

The path is well maintained, and it is possible to stroll around the area around the Yayoi cedars.

On the other hand, this is because Shiratani-unsui Gorge is not a national park or a World Natural Heritage site, and therefore has only a few footpaths and bridges.

A visit to the Yayoi cedar alone will take approximately 60 minutes.

If you have more time, a popular course is to take the Kusu River Trail from the primeval forest trail to the Jomon Cedars from the entire Shiratani-unsui Gorge, including the Princess Mononoke Forest.

    Directions to Yayoi Cedar

Yayoi Cedar can be reached by car or bus to the Shiratani-unsui Gorge entrance and then following the trail.

Shiratani-unsuikyo is located approximately 20 minutes by rental car from the Miyanoura area.

Turn toward the mountain at the Miyanoura Elementary School intersection, and when you see the sign for Shiratani Unsuikyo, follow the road up the mountain.

Free parking is available at the entrance.

If you follow the course from the entrance of Shiratani-unsui Gorge, it will take about 20 minutes to reach the site.
