Yakushima - Daio cedar
What is Daio Cedar?
Daio cedar was known as "Daio," the largest Yakusugi cedar on the island, until the new Jomon cedar was discovered in 1966.
The tree is approximately 25 meters tall, estimated to be over 3,000 years old, and with a trunk circumference of 11.1 meters, it is still a representative of the Yakusugi cedars along with the Jomon cedars, and lives up to its name of "Great King" with a very imposing appearance.
The roots of the Daio cedar, covered with moss over time, have a large hole in them, and the inside is hollow enough for a person to easily enter.
There used to be a path that allowed visitors to get close enough to peek inside the cavity, but because the cedar bark was peeled off and people who built fires inside started fires, the path is now only accessible from a distance of a few meters.
Even so, you can get much closer to the cedars than from the observation deck, and they are located on the route to the cedars, so please feel the powerful energy of the "Great One" up close.
