Yakushima-Ogawa Falls
What is Okawa Falls?
The largest waterfall on Yakushima is Okawa Falls, which has been selected as one of the 100 most famous waterfalls in Japan.
It is located at the southern entrance of the western forest road in Yakushima Town. The sight of water cascading down from the rugged granite cliffs into the waterfall basin, which boasts the highest drop in Kyushu at 88 meters, is a powerful sight.
Especially after it rains, the volume of water is tremendous, with splashes of water over 20 meters wide.
Even if you are at the observatory, a rain kappa is essential.
The geology of the falls is composed of hornfels (thermal metamorphic rock, contact metamorphic rock), which is formed by thermal metamorphism of sedimentary rock, and is purplish black in color.
It is possible to walk to the waterfall basin, which is about 5 minutes from the western forest road to the boardwalk.
In front of the waterfall, visitors can drink "Okawa Spring Water," which has been selected as one of the "100 best waters.
