Yakushima-Masuyasushi-jinja
What is Mashu Shrine?
The power spot of Yakushima is the Jomon cedars, but another one that is universally recognized is the Yakuji Shrine.
Although not a very large shrine, it has long been worshipped on Yakushima as a shrine that protects the island.
There is a torii gate in front of the shrine, and a sycamore tree is planted nearby, giving the shrine a very tropical feel.
As you enter, there is a banyan tree on the left and two stone statues of Kongorikishi (A-form and Un-form), cultural assets of the town, built in the Tenpo Period (Edo Period), in front of it.
It is a quiet and mysterious shrine that is considered a power spot.
In addition, a rare "mountain climbing good luck charm" is sold at the shrine office.
History Since it was dedicated in the first year of Daido (806), it has been regarded as the town guardian of both Tanegashima and Yaku Island.
It is one of the shiki-nai-sha (shrines of prestige) in Kagoshima Prefecture, with Yamayukihiko "Amatsu Hidaka Hibidemi no Mikoto" as the main deity.
The name of the shrine was already listed as the deity of Yakushima in the list of the national Shinto shrines by an imperial decree issued by Emperor Daigo (897-930).
