Yakushima - Hon-Tomidake
What is Hon-Tomidake?
When it comes to mountain climbing in Yakushima, Miyanoura-dake is famous, but not to be outdone, Motomitodake (also known as Mt. Mocchom), located in the southern part of Yakushima, is also well-known.
It is characterized by sharp rock faces. Mt. Motjom is 940 m above sea level, which is in the low mountain category, but the trailhead is only 270 m above sea level, and from there it is a series of steep slopes for most of the way to the summit.
The last rocky part is climbed by rope.
Although it is a day course, it is a solid mountain climb.
The dense growth of moss on the trees is conspicuous, and the mountain does not have the atmosphere of a low mountain.
The trailhead for Mt. Mocchomu is at Chihiro Falls, one of Yakushima's most popular tourist spots.
There is a famous giant cedar called "Bandai Cedar" in the middle of the course, which, as its name suggests, is a life force.
Also, from the Kamiyama Observatory, you can see the great ocean far ahead. Upon reaching the summit, the buildings and cars below look like a diorama.
