What is Yakushima Lighthouse?
The beautiful Nagata Cape is located on the west side of Nagata village in the northeastern part of Yakushima, and the Yakushima Lighthouse with a history of more than 100 years stands at the tip of the cape (first lit in 1897).
The tower is 19.6 meters high to the top, and the light reaches 22 nautical miles (40 km) offshore.
The white of the building contrasts well with the blue of the sky in this lighthouse.
Yakushima Lighthouse is one of the eight lighthouses established to protect the Taiwan Straits after Taiwan's possession.
While the Yakushima Lighthouse is built of an eclectic mix of brick and granite, cement is the only material used for the base, and this is the first time cement has been used on Yakushima.
The Yakushima Strait between the lighthouse and Kuchinoerabu Island is served by large liner passenger and cargo ships that connect the mainland with Amami and Okinawa.
Although you cannot enter the lighthouse, it is a popular spot to watch the sunset into the sea.
Nearby is Nagata Beach, famous for its sea turtle spawning.
How to get to Yakushima Lighthouse
Yakushima Lighthouse is located approximately 45 km from Awa Port and a 35-minute drive from Miyanoura Port.
From the Western Forest Road, take the side road marked by the sign. It is wise to have an experienced driver to take the side road, as it is very narrow.
